Welcome to the Oki Islands! 隠岐へようこそ！
The Oki Islands have something to offer every traveler, whether it be hiking, camping, kayaking, snorkeling or exploring the islands by bicycle, car or sightseeing boat. The picturesque scenery, fresh seafood and rich Oki culture make these islands an ideal place to experience the beauty of rural Japan. This remote island group is a member of the UNESCO Global Geoparks Network, something people in Oki are very proud of. Come and discover the Oki Islands yourself!
Oki can be reached by plane from Osaka International (Itami) Airport and Izumo En-musubi Airport in surprisingly little time with Japan Airlines (JAL) www.jal.co.jp.
JR pass holders can also get here cheaply by taking the train as far as JR Yonago, JR Matsue or JR Sakaiminato stations, then then take the Oki Kisen Ferry Line. You will need to catch a shuttle bus to the port from JR Yonago and JR Matsue Stations.
Ferry/fast ferry and shuttle bus times and prices can be found at www.oki-kisen.co.jp.
Oki Islands (隠岐諸島 Oki-shotō, or 隠岐群島 Oki-guntō) is an archipelago in the Sea of Japan, which is administratively part of Oki District, Shimane Prefecture, Japan. The islands have a total area of 346.1 square kilometers (133.6 sq mi). The archipelago is within the borders of the Daisen-Oki National Park and the Oki Islands UNESCO Global Geopark . The Oki Islands are volcanic in origin, and are the exposed eroded summits of two massive strato-volcanoes dating approximately 5 million years ago to the Tertiary and Quaternary periods. The basement of the islands is a fragment of the Eurasian Continent from around 250 million years ago; the oldest rock in the Japanese Archipelago.
There are tourist information offices on each island. The staff here will do their best to help you, but some islands do not have many English speakers. We recommend that you make bookings (by email - English/Japanese or by phone - Japanese) before you head out to Oki. There are a limited number of places to stay, taxis, rent-a-cars etc. Public transport is not so efficient in rural Japan. If you like cycling or walking long distances then Oki is a good place to visit!
Please email the tourism office for assistance reserving accommodation, transport and so on.
