Day After

Fukuura Tunnels

These tunnels are a glimpse into way of life of generations past on these mountainous and isolated islands. These tunnels were dug at various stages throughout history into the soft pyroclastic rock of the cliff along the coast in Fukuura. The smaller tunnels along the wave-eroded platform are large enough for a person to pass through, whilst the larger tunnel on the right was dug later and then widened for larger vehicles to pass through. You will thoroughly enjoy walking back through time and imagining people using these tunnels by the sea to travel the neighboring areas. Also, these tunnels provide an exciting and unique opportunity to walk through the astounding terrain created by pyroclastic flow.
